5 Things To Know Before Choosing a Dance Studio Centerstage Schedules
Enrollment FAQ

If most dance studios seem to have qualified, friendly teachers, experience teaching children and a big show at the end of the year, aren't they all pretty much the same?  Does it really matter which place you decide to enroll?  YES!  There are 5 important things that can make a big difference in the quality of instruction you or your child receives, the amount of extra work and hassles parents must deal with and the overall enjoyments and satisfaction of being involved in an arts program.  Here are 5 things everyone needs to consider before deciding on a dance studio:
1.  What type of dance floor is used? Dance is a very physical activity that requires a lot of jumping, which can put stress on bones and joints.  The best way to protect against potential injury is by choosing a studio with a professional "floating floor" (a dance floor that rests on a system of high-density foam) to absorb the shock of jumping.  Derby Dance Arts  two studios have floating wood "sprung" floors (wood substructure built over the subfloor) built over foam.  A marley top surface in both studios is specially finished to handle flamenco, tap and clogging, in addition to pointe, modern, jazz and ballroom dance styles.  Our special floors help reduce the risk of injuries and allow students to dance longer without getting tired.

2.  What is the size of the class? If the class has fewer students in it, each dancer will receive more personalized attention, learn more and have more fun.  Our school limits all of our classes (ages 6-18 yr) to a maximum of just 12 students per class.  Our younger dance and music programs limit students to 8-10 per class (depending on the style being taught).

3.  How does your studio enhance learning and safety? Most studios have contiguous walls where hip hop music can be heard in the ballet or ballroom classes.  A spacious, welcoming lobby separates our two studios.  This prevents sound "bleed-over" from studio to studio and promotes a student's focus on the work being offered in each class.  The open-style lobby allows for a comfortable change of classes and plenty of room for adults waiting to take class or pick up students.  Our location at the back of Broadmarket Square in Building F (not directly on 8th Street) keeps students safe from busy traffic.

4.  Don't all studios offer the same classes? Typically, most studios offer ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and competition teams.  We connect to the community through additional instruction in the arts such as:  voice lessons, musical instrument lessons (group and private), musical theater, multicultural dance (flamenco, bellydance, Japanese and Argentine tango), ADULT classes in more styles than anywhere else PLUS unique SUMMER offerings not found elsewhere!

5.  What performance opportunities and "extras" do you offer students? Unique story-themed dance shows give all age groups a chance to perform at nine different times during the year.  Our winter show highlights our youngest dancers (3-8 yr) in an original-scripted show with musical theater classes and ballet variations.  Our February show presents our advanced ballet company and the late May show lets the youngest students perform again just before our big June recital (which closes our the 9-month program).  Our Danzas Flamencas performing group is often booked to present multicultural lecture/demos to public groups.  Costume alterations are free and we provide free Hair & Makeup classes for the annual recital.  Our new MUSIC PROGRAM will be presenting their students in these shows and in other recitals at regular intervals, too!  We believe that quality performance opportunies enhance the learning experience and excite the student to attend classes and work with JOY!
