Enrollment FAQ
MUSICAL THEATER: This class is for students interested in learning the acting and singing portion of theater in addition to dance. Barre, center work and vocal training are all part of the instruction and students will play a pivotal role in the June show.  Other shows for the 4-month programs offer opportunities for our musical theater students.  This year, the Musical Theater VOICE class is highly recommended.

PILATES:  This form of gentle strength work is offered on mats and will also include free weight work.  Pilates helps increase "core" strength of the body so that everyday movement and dance is easier and safer.

PRE BALLET: This 4 month program class is for 4 & 5 year olds and covers the basics of ballet: positions, arms, basic barre work in the center, stretching, diagonal floor work and terminology.  Props, counting, creative story movement and music help these dancers go into Ballet 1 with confidence and joy!

PRE-POIN
TE: This secondary class is for ballet dancers (ages 10-12) in level 3 & 4 classes who are preparing for pointe.  The class builds upon the student's current ballet class and introduces the specific exercises plus theraband work  to build strength in the foot and ankle and insure proper alignment for progression to full pointe class and level 4. All dancers must be enrolled in primary ballet class and have their own theraband - available at Derby Dance & Music Arts.

POIN
TE: This special style of ballet is for dancers with proper placement, strength, knowledge and experience (no younger than 11 years) who wish to learn the art of dancing in pointe shoes.  Work is at the barre beginning in level 1 and all dancers must be in extra ballet classes .  All levels 5 and higher  work in pointe shoes in their regular ballet class.  Pointe work is a pre-requisite for variations class.

PRIVATE DANCE LESS
ONS: All teachers are available for private lessons when studio space is available.  Fees (to cover studio and instructor) are set by the individual teacher and are determined by style, level and length of lesson.  Reservations must be made in advance and posted in the lobby.  Fees are paid to the TEACHER at the time the lesson is taken.  Cancellations need to be made 24 hours in advance or a $15.00 fee is charged for reserving studio space.

PRIVATE MUSIC LESS
ONS: These are scheduled in 30-minute slots and are booked with the teachers on staff based on their availability.  Eight weeks commitment are required to begin private lessons which are held at Derby Dance & Music Arts..  Piano, voice, guitar, flute, saxophone, violin plus other string instruments are offered.  Offerings change with the faculty and move information can be obtained from the office.

TAP: Using the basics of ballet for arms and balance, we train dancers in all styles of tap: Broadway, hoofing, rhythm and stomp.  Tap is usually combined with Jazz and will also be offered as a focused technique class this fall for interested adults and teens.

VARIATIONS:
This most advanced form of classical ballet  presents the dancer in her pointe shoes in solo dances that are very short - call "Variations".  All dancers must be enrolled in Level 5 or higher classes to participate.  These dancers have extra opportunities to perform their  solos in the recitals.
