School Background
Derby Dance & Music Arts is a privately owned school that was founded in 1994.  We have one location in the southwest section of Colorado Springs called the Broadmoor area with growing enrollment of over 200 families.  We are a "recreation" style school teaching many styles of dance with an expanding music program (voice, piano, flute, etc.).  About 65% of our students are under 17 years old and our adults make up about 35% of  our program.  We realize that most of our students will not become professional musicians or dancers, but we foster a strong educational environment with a well organized administration and first rate equipment. Our students audition regularly and report that they are well-prepared for the many opportunities available in the arts like musical and theater shows and college dance programs.
Why Teach with Us?
There are many places to teach in the Colorado Springs area.  Why should you consider teaching with us?
DANCE:
If you have found you can express your artistic style through your teaching, the main difference will be how the organization of the studio affects your satisfaction and ability to focus on your teaching.

1-Small class sizes
We limit class sizes to make classes easier to control and monitor.  Classes for dancers aged 3-5 are limited to 10 and classes for older ages are limited to 12 students.  This lets you give more personalized attention to each dancer in your class. Adult class sizes are at the teacher's discretion.

2-Full time administrative support    In many studios, there is no receptionist on duty, meaning that teachers are faced with office details when they should be concentrating on teaching.  Our front desk staff is available during class times to handle routine questions and details that arise.

3-Great dance surfaces   Our floating Marley floors sit on wood and foam combinations - (NO direct contact with concrete) and create a safe and healthy environment for our teachers.  When you teach for hours each day, preventing fatigue and injuries is an important consideration.

4-Video monitoring system
Parents and friends love to watch what everyone is learning but that can be a real problem in keeping students' attention in class.  We have wireless color cameras transmitting to a monitor in the lobby so you can keep control of your class and keep viewers from interrupting classes.

5-Continuing education provided  Special classes that help our teachers stay educated in the latest styles and teaching methods are paid for by the school. We cover some performances and pay for extra work in community outreach programs.

6-Recital support    We take care of organizing recitals, fitting costumes, collecting fees and notifying students through our newsletters.  Teachers concentrate on teaching, choreographing and have creative input on dances and costumes.
MUSIC: As a music teacher, you can either teach privately in your house or in students' homes or in a music store or school - all have their upsides and downsides.

1- Constant flow of new students
With no expenses for receptionists or advertising, you can keep all the money you charge to the student, but getting a full schedule can be expensive if you have to run ads.
Students move or quit and can leave gaps in the schedule.  Derby Dance & Music Arts markets our program in over 15 different ways all year long to attract new students.

2-Your time is respected  Driving to student's homes limits the time you can spend teaching. At our school you do not have noisy distractions like phones, tvs and family members.  Your time is not abused and we collect the fees and pay you.

3-Recital and administrative support   We handle the details of scheduling, collecting and arranging all the details for recitals. Enforcing attendance and policies makes it hard to concentrate on teaching. Teaching at a music school may be a little less per student, but when the school assumes the business expenses to get students, a consistently full schedule means you earn more overall. Teachers are paid for lessons scheduled even if a student misses. You are free to focus on teaching arts and creating with the community.
